The short version: Brevier does not collect, transmit, or sell your data. Audio is captured only from the tab you choose, processed on your device, and discarded. There are no accounts, no analytics, and no tracking.

What Brevier processes on your device

Brevier is a Chrome extension that shows live captions for the audio of a tab you explicitly choose, and can optionally translate those captions. All speech recognition and translation run locally inside Chrome:

  • Tab audio. When you press Start, the extension captures the audio of the selected tab only, and only while captions are running. Audio is held in memory, processed by the on-device speech engine, and discarded. It is never recorded to disk and never transmitted.
  • Captions and translations. Recognized text and any translation are produced on your machine — with on-device models (Moonshine, Parakeet, Whisper, and optionally Hunyuan-MT) or with Chrome's built-in translator — and are displayed in the caption overlay. They are never sent to a server.
  • Page content. The caption overlay does not read, collect, or transmit page content. It only draws the caption bar on top of the page.

What is stored on your device

Brevier saves a small amount of data in Chrome's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local) so the extension works the way you configured it:

  • Your settings: engine, language, translation options, and caption appearance.
  • The caption bar position.
  • The daily free Pro-minutes counter.
  • Your Pro license state, if you purchased Pro.

This data stays in your browser profile. It is never sent to Brevier's developer, and Chrome removes it when you uninstall the extension.

Pro purchases

Pro is optional and unlocks the remaining transcription languages and Hunyuan-MT translation. Checkout and license management are handled by ExtensionPay, a third-party service for browser extension payments, which uses Stripe to process payments. When you buy Pro or sign in, ExtensionPay processes your purchase and stores the details needed to verify it; their privacy policy and terms apply to that processing. Brevier stores only the resulting license state (and the account email returned by ExtensionPay) locally in your browser, and contacts ExtensionPay's service over the network only to verify a purchase or open the checkout page. Brevier never receives your card details.

Permissions and why they are needed

  • tabCapture — captures the audio of the tab you start captions on, so the on-device speech engine has something to transcribe.
  • offscreen — Chrome's background service workers cannot hold audio or run the speech engines; an offscreen document does that work locally.
  • storage — saves your settings and license state on your device.
  • activeTab — lets the popup check whether the current tab can be captured and start or stop captions for it.
  • Content script on sites you visit — renders the click-through caption bar on whatever site you choose to caption. It does not read or transmit page content.

What Brevier does not do

  • No collection or transmission of audio, captions, translations, or browsing activity.
  • No user accounts or sign-ins (except the optional Pro license).
  • No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, or advertising.
  • No selling or sharing of data with third parties.

Children's privacy

Brevier is a general-purpose tool that is not directed to children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with an updated date. Material changes will also be noted in the extension's release notes.
